‘Repentance’ is one of the most powerful words in the Bible. It is the crux of this repentance network.

John the Baptist was known for leading people into a ‘baptism of repentance’. He told people to “bear fruits worthy of repentance” (Luke 3:8).

What did he mean? Listen…

To the people he said: If you have 2 coats and extra food, give some away.

To the tax collectors he said: Collect no more than what is right and legal.

To the soldiers he said: Stop intimidating people, and be content with your pay.

True repentance involved a change of lifestyle. It meant to ‘turn away from’ the wrong and embrace the right. So, what is God asking you and I to ‘turn away from’ in true repentance?

Let’s repent in prayer right now.

1. Let’s repent for ourselves

Dear Lord,
For preachers like me, you might ask us to ‘practice what we preach,’ to stop exaggerating, and to lead with a servant’s heart, and not as a boss. For this we ask forgiveness. Remind us again what pleases You, and help us to embrace it fully.

2. Let’s repent for America
Dear Lord,
Our coins say we trust in You. Forgive us for trusting in our coins, and neglecting You. Forgive us for rushing to You when times are hard and forgetting You when things get better. Forgive us for hearing the truth each Sunday but not applying it on Monday.

3. Let’s repent for our world

Dear Lord,
In the past, many kings and rulers turned to You, and thus experienced many years of peace in their lands. Today, we ask You to speak to the presidents and prime ministers of our world. Forgive them and us for our pride that says we are better, richer and wiser. Remind us that world peace cannot be legislated, but can only begin in man’s heart through Your love and forgiveness. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, amen.
